Planting:
- Location: Choose a spot with full sun (6+ hours daily) and good air circulation. Climbing roses need space to grow and climb.
- Soil: They thrive in rich, well-draining soil with a pH around 6.0-6.5. Amend soil with compost for added nutrients.
- Support: Install a trellis, fence, or wall support before planting, as climbing roses need something to train and attach to.
Growing:
- Spacing: Allow at least 3 feet between plants to give roots room to spread.
- Training: As new canes grow, gently tie them to the support structure to encourage upward growth and better blooms.
Watering:
- Frequency: Water deeply once a week, especially during dry periods. Avoid getting the leaves wet to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
- Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and keep roots cool.
Care & Maintenance:
- Pruning: In early spring, prune weak or dead canes and shape the plant. Deadhead spent blooms throughout the growing season.
- Fertilizing: Use a balanced rose fertilizer or compost in spring, and again mid-season, to promote healthy blooms.
