Potting:
- Container & Soil: Choose a deep pot with drainage holes, as lupines have long taproots. Use well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0-7.0).
- Sowing: Plant lupine seeds about ¼ inch deep. Lightly cover with soil.
Growing:
- Light: Lupines thrive in full sun. Place the pot in a spot where it can get at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.
- Temperature: Optimal temperatures for germination are around 60-70°F (15-21°C). Lupines can tolerate cooler climates once established.
Watering:
- Frequency: Water regularly, especially when the soil feels dry on top. Lupines prefer evenly moist soil but avoid overwatering as they dislike soggy conditions.
- Drainage: Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.
Maintenance:
- Fertilizing: Lupines don’t require much feeding. You can apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once during the growing season.
- Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage new blooms and prevent self-seeding.
- Support: Tall lupine plants may need staking in windy areas to prevent stems from bending or breaking.
